Eddie Izzard was born on 7 February 1962 in Aden, Yemen. He is the son of Harold John Izzard, an accountant in British Petroleum, and Dorothy Ella, a nurse and midwife. When he was one year old, he his family moved to Northern Ireland and he lived there along with his family till the age of five. He lost his mother to cancer at the age of six.

He attended the St. Bede’s Preparatory School and the Eastbourne College. He could not complete his education at the University of Sheffield, but here he started to perform stand-ups. After being expelled from the university, he became a street performer in Europe and US. He then performed his stand-up at The Comedy Store in London, Britain.

His stand-up comedy earned him the British Comedy Awards for ‘Live at the Ambassadors‘ in 1993 and for ‘Definite Article’ in 1996. He performed his ‘Definite Article’ at the major cities outside UK and for a short spell of time in New York City. However, he came to be recognized in America, only after his performance in ‘Dress to Kill’, which was aired on HBO in 1999. He also appeared in a supporting role, in the movie ‘Mystery Man’.

He has also acted in the films like ‘The Avengers’, ‘Shadow of The Vampire’, ‘All The Queen’s Men’, ‘My Super Ex-Girlfriend‘ and ‘Ocean’s Thirteen’.

He appeared on stage for ‘The Cryptogram’, ‘900 Oneonta’, ‘Edward II’, ‘Lenny‘ and ‘A Day in the Death of Joe Egg’. Izzard and Victoria Hamilton performed again as the lead cast when ‘A Day in the Death of Joe Egg‘ was brought to Broadway. He earned the nomination for the Best Leading Actor at the Tony Awards.

He appeared on television for ‘The Tonight Show with Jay Leno’ (2002, 2004 and 2007), ‘Top Gear’, ‘Late Show with David Letterman‘, ‘The Riches’, ‘The Henry Rollins Show’, etc.

His stand- ups includes ‘Unrepeatable’, ‘Glorious‘, ‘Circle‘, ‘Sexie‘ and ‘Stripped‘. He is also known to do mimicry and mime. He also loves to cross-dress on and off the stage.

He became the winner of two primetime Emmy Awards in 2000; he won the Emmy for ‘Eddie Izzard: Dress to Kill’ under the categories of Outstanding Individual Performance in a Variety or Music Program and Outstanding Writing for a Variety, Music or Comedy Program. He earned the nomination for the same award in the category of Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Special for ‘Eddie Izzard: Dress to Kill’ in the same year. In 2007, he was nominated for the Satellite Award for the Best Actor in a Series, Drama for ‘The Riches’, and also for the Teen Choice Award of Choice Movie: Chemistry for ‘Ocean’s Thirteen’.
